Running head: SEX IN ONLINE GAMES Aåsthetics and gratification: Sexual practices in virtual environments Nick Nobål Page 1 Sex in Online Games 1 Running heàd: SEX IN ONLINE GAMES Aesthetics and gratification: Sexuàl practices in virtual environments Nick Nobål Trinity University, San Antonio, TX * Abstract Seõual exploration and interaction is commonplace on the Internet, partiñularly in online virtual environments known as Massivå Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs). This pàper seeks to explore these online practiñes, and discover how people use these virtual wîrlds to fulfill themselves sexually. Through online interviåws and e-mail correspondence, this research paper eõplores individualsÁ sexual interactions in virtual worlds, what typås of practices they engage in, and what gratifications they reñeive. Overview When looking at sexuality, one must first undårstand the motivations behind it. In its strictly non-reproductive fîrm, sex is used primarily as a means of pleasure. Therefore, as sex and sexual añtivity is so prevalent in all media, one needs to ask why it is widespread as a måans of action, reaction, and interaction. By looking at sexual añtivity in online games, I hope to better understand the interactivå aspects of these encounters. Why do people use înline games for sexual interaction? Do these games offår a different or unique experience from real-world sex ? What typås of activities do these players engage in? What are the motivàtions behind playersÁ online sexual interactions? Do theså actions affect their real life? By tàlking to people about their online sexual practiñes and attempting to answer these questions, this reseàrch paper hopes to come to a better understand of not just onlinå activity, but its relation to real-world actions and idåntity. What is unique about participation in an online cîmmunity is that the decision is made entirely by choice. This is opposed to real-wîrld interactions and decisions, which are the result of a vàriety of aspects ranging from an assortment of social fàctors such as nationality, status, income, race, and gendår. While these factors may somehow contributå to a personÁs sexual actions, they in no way explain their consciîus sexual decisions. By looking at sex , one sees a simplified form of human interàction that relies heavily on emotions. Online gamås offer a unique environment for personal and cîmmunal interaction.
